Happy New Year! On behalf of the Board of the San Diego Section of the American Planning Association, we wish you a wonderful 2016 and strongly encourage you to fully participate in the SDAPA activities that we’re planning for this year. Count on having some good fun at some great programs and social events throughout the year!
Our San Diego section had a very busy 2015. I hope you had the opportunity to participate in at least a few of the great events! Here are some highlights:
The Section’s awards event was held at the Prado in Balboa Park, one of the inaugural Great Places in California. Awards were presented in twelve categories and a number of those were recognized at the APA California conference held last Fall in Oakland. Also recognized was Supervisor Greg Cox, a 2015 National APA award winner.
There were a number of excellent programs offered in 2015 including sessions on renewable energy, foodsheds and bioregionalism, Border transportation and Balboa Park assets and history. In October, the Section hosted an evening with Gil Penalosa, an international leader and advocate for the creation of great public spaces.
Also, this year’s AICP training resulted in San Diego having seven new Certified Planners. And, the Young Planners Group has completed another excellent Mentorship Program. Last, but not least, the Section held several Planners Night Out events that were wildly successful!
Nominations for this year’s planning awards will be opening in the near future. Please take the opportunity to highlight the good work you’ve been doing at your firm or agency by submitting for a local APA award. Not only have some great projects won at the local level, but we have an excellent record of receiving awards at the state level when we compete against others in California.
And remember, you can’t enjoy the good friends and great times unless you attend some member events. See you there!
Gary Halbert, AICP
