The City of San Marcos Development Services Department has an exciting opportunity for a Full Time Assistant Planner in the Planning Division. The Development Services Department provides a one-stop-shop for private development projects and handles everything from project entitlement approvals to construction permits while addressing violations of the City Ordinances related to land use and development.

This position is the first point of service for the public for all planning related inquiries as the full time Planning Division representative at the Development Services front counter. The ideal candidate must have strong communication and analytical skills, be a team player with exemplary customer service skills and be willing to apply his or her previous experiences and knowledge within the planning field to this exciting time of growth in the City of San Marcos.

Under direction and general supervision, performs various professional field and office planning work related to current and advanced planning, including review of development and land use applications, zoning, site plans, and environmental documents; provides project management and administration; completes technical assessments and prepares written project analyses; provides professional assistance to the public on planning, community development, zoning, permits, and environmental review; provides staff assistance to the City Planner, other departments, and the public in areas of expertise; performs a variety of studies and prepares and presents staff reports.

This is the intermediate level class in the professional planning series. Initially under close supervision, incumbents with basic planning experience perform professional and technical planning work in current, long-term, and/or environmental planning activities, and daily departmental operations, in addition to providing project management and administration. As experience is gained, assignments become more varied and are performed with greater independence. Positions at this level usually perform most of the duties required of the positions at the Associate level, but are not expected to function at the same skill level and usually exercise less independent discretion and judgment in matters related to work procedures and methods. Work is supervised while in progress and fits an established structure or pattern.
