Job Description:

The Community Planning unit in Campus Planning is responsible for collaboration with internal and external campus stakeholders, members of the public, external groups and organizations, elected officials, their staffs, and governmental agencies, such as Caltrans, the City of San Diego, SANDAG, the California Coastal Commission, and others.

Community planners identify and respond to issues of concern to the University, develop and coordinate University positions on such issues, and communicate with external audiences and agencies. In particular, the campus community planning function is responsible for matters related to land use planning, housing, transportation, neighborhood and community relations, as well as relationships with governmental agencies related to such matters.

The Associate Community Planner performs a variety of tasks and provides professional physical and community planning services for the UC San Diego campus. Collaborates and prepares planning materials which include presentation materials, report writing, preparation of permit applications, presentation graphics and correspondence.

Incumbent may act as departmental representative both on and off campus to certain committees and/or work groups. Reviews campus projects for consistency with development plans, standards and policies in regard to their communication with the public and local agencies. Position requires ability to maintain confidentiality, provide good judgment and demonstrated knowledge of effective written and oral communications, and administrative/organizational skills.

Uses skills as a seasoned, experienced planning professional with a full understanding of industry practices and organization policies and procedures and full range of planning skills and expertise; resolves a wide range of issues. Demonstrates good judgment in selecting methods and techniques for obtaining solutions. Operates with considerable independence in concept planning, project definition and feasibility phases of major construction projects.
