The City of Coronado is currently seeking qualified candidates for the position of Associate Planner, to join the Community Development Department. There is currently one vacancy, however, this recruitment could be used to fill any additional vacancies that may occur within the next 6 months.
Under general supervision direction, to perform professional level duties in support of the City’s current and advanced planning functions and resolve code violations; to research, compile, analyze and present data for land use, community development, and transportation planning programs. The Associate Planner will be responsible for preparing and presenting written and oral reports, graphs, tables and other documents. In addition to providing clear and accurate technical and policy information to residents, developers, City departments, external agencies and the business community on the City’s zoning regulations and land use policies. the Associate Planner will also present to council on occasion and perform a variety of other duties relative to assigned areas of responsibility.
The ideal candidate will possess knowledge of principles and practices of current and advanced urban planning and zoning. The ideal candidate will have high ethical and professional standards, strong organizational skills, the ability to effectively and efficiently prioritize, excellent communication and customer service skills and will have experience interpreting and applying municipal, legislative and government processes as they relate to planning and development projects. The ideal candidate will also possess a professional history that demonstrates the following necessary leadership competencies and attributes:
- Organizational awareness and ability to anticipate sensitive issues that could impact the community
- Prepare and conduct effective public and committee presentations
- Interpret and apply federal, state and local laws, codes, standards and regulations governing general plans, zoning, land use, permit processing, subdivision and related planning functional area
- Strong knowledge of City development review procedures and requirements.
- Methods and techniques of conducting site and field investigations and assessments.

Any combination of experience and training that would likely provide the required knowledge and abilities is qualifying. A typical way to obtain the knowledge and abilities would be:
Experience: At least three years of increasingly responsible professional level planning experience.
Education/Training: Equivalent to a Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university with major course work in urban planning or a related field.
Licenses and Certificates: Possession of a valid Class C California Driver’s License with a safe driving record.

Applications will be reviewed on the basis of relevant education, training, and experience. Applicants considered most qualified will be contacted and invited to participate in an examination process (100%). Candidates who successfully complete the examination process will be placed on an eligibility list for a period of at least six months. To meet eligibility, candidates must score 70% or higher in all components of the examination process to be considered as having passed. Oral panel interviews have been tentatively scheduled for Monday, June 25, 2018. Candidates who successfully pass the examination process will be placed on an eligibility list for a period of at least six months.
