SANDAG influences local land use and economic policies through regional transportation investments in transit, highways, bike infrastructure, freight corridors, transportation demand management, transportation system management, and supporting programs, and through financial incentives. Identifying emerging economic and long-term trends are a focus of the economic function of the agency and help to strengthen the capacity and support coherence of strategic policy development related to regional plans, programs, and projects. As a regional agency, SANDAG is uniquely positioned to bring together decision-makers from all areas of the region to discuss issues of mutual concern and coordination.
The Chief Economist provides leadership, analysis, and management expertise to develop, coordinate, and implement innovative region-wide fiscal and economic strategies designed to proactively leverage new opportunities and drive the agency toward reaching its strategic goals. The success of this position rests in enabling global competitiveness, productivity, and efficiency and promoting consistency between transportation improvements and the planned growth and economic development patterns of the region. This position is part of the upper management team at SANDAG consisting of the Executive Director, Chief Deputy Executive Director, General Counsel, and seven Department Directors: Administration, Finance, Land Use and Transportation Planning, Mobility Management and Project Implementation, Operations, Technical Services, and TransNet, in addition to the Director of Communications, Principal Legislative Analyst, and Transportation Demand Management Program Manager.
Qualifications include a bachelor’s degree with major course work in regional economics, applied economics, econometrics, public finance, or a related field, and eight years of professional experience in applied economics, financial analysis, and economic research or a related field. A graduate degree is highly desirable.
