This senior-level position is responsible for developing, designing, implementing, and effectively managing community-based active transportation projects and plans such as Safe Routes to School, Active Transportation Plans, Mobility Plans, etc. Another key responsibility of this position is the cultivation of partnerships with planning firms, other nonprofits, school systems, and local jurisdictions to generate fee-for-service contracts. This position ensures that all projects are delivered and completed on time, on budget, and to agreed quality standards. The Director of Programs oversees a staff of four and works closely with the Executive Director and other senior staff to develop funding proposals. The Director of Programs works closely with school systems, public officials, community groups, and decision makers in local government to carry out projects that increase active transportation, improve safety, and promote more walkable, bikable, and transit-friendly neighborhoods.
The successful candidate for this position will have a master’s degree from an accredited university in planning, transportation, or a related field of study. The ideal candidate will have at least five years’ experience in developing and writing planning documents, and experience with Safe Routes to School programs, the delivery of government contracts, writing successful grant proposals, working at the grassroots level with neighborhood groups, and carrying out public advocacy. Other desired qualities include bilingual verbal and written fluency in English and Spanish, as well as proficiency in using MS Office suite, Adobe Creative Suite, email, the internet, social media and GIS ARCView software. Strong time-management, interpersonal,written, and oral communication skills are also essential.
