As a Land Use/Environmental Planner I supporting the County’s Airports Division, you will provide assistance to staff and management regarding a full range of airports functions, including operations, maintenance activities, public relations, real property, and long-term facility and environmental planning. You will coordinate the preparation of airport reviews and studies, including Part 150 studies, Master Planning, Airport Layout Plans, etc. to ensure compliance with Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) advisory circulars, State, and Local regulations and development guidelines.

The Position
Land Use/Environmental Planner I is the first working level class in the series and performs professional environmental and planning studies, research, and data analysis to develop goals and policy or project recommendations for adoption by decision-making bodies.  Incumbents independently process projects/tasks characterized by having moderate public controversy, and of low complexity such as minor use permits, variances, administrative permits, boundary adjustments, tentative parcel maps, or policy and ordinance changes.
Minimum Qualifications
1. A bachelor’s degree from an accredited U.S. college or university, or a certified foreign studies equivalency, in airport/aviation management or closely related field, AND, one (1) year of progressively responsible professional level experience in airport planning. Experience must have been at the level equivalent to a Junior Land Use/Environmental Planner within the County of San Diego; OR,
2. A master’s degree from an accredited U.S. college or university, or a certified foreign studies equivalency, in one of the fields stated above. No experience required; OR,
3. One (1) year of experience as a Junior Land Use/Environmental Planner with the County of San Diego.
Note: Professional level land use/environmental planning experience in a public or private agency may substitute for education on a year for year basis, for up to two (2) years of the education requirement. Degree must be from a U.S. accredited college or university, or certified equivalency for foreign studies must be provided.
