PLANNING & DEVELOPMENT SERVICES
Through operational excellence and attention to customer service, Planning & Development Services (PDS) strives to balance community, economic and environmental interests to ensure the highest quality of life for the public of San Diego County.
PDS is responsible for long range land use planning, including the County’s General Plan and Zoning Ordinance, which determine how our communities will grow. The department analyzes privately initiated land use projects to ensure compliance with land use regulations and advises the Board of Supervisors and Planning Commission on the projects. Through programs, such as building plan review, building inspection and code compliance help maintain public health and safety.
THE IDEAL CANDIDATE
We are looking for a leader who is able to communicate effectively, mentor and coach staff, is a progressive thinker who thrives, and has demonstrated experience, at policy and ordinance development in a fast-paced, high-profile and demanding environment.
The Land Use/Environmental Planning Manager is responsible for coordinating and directing the work of planning staff and consultants involved in the project management, preparation, review, and processing of land use projects.
- A master’s degree from an accredited U.S. college or university, or a certified foreign studies equivalency in urban studies, urban planning, geography, anthropology, biology, geology, ecology, zoology, environmental management, landscape architecture, engineering or a closely related field; AND three (3) years of professional level regulatory planning, land use permit processing, long-range planning, or environmental management experience with a public or private land use agency. Professional level experience must be at the level equivalent to a Land Use/Environmental Planner III with the County of San Diego; OR
- A bachelor’s degree from an accredited U.S. college or university, or a certified foreign studies equivalency in the same fields listed in number 1 above; AND four (4) years of professional level regulatory planning, land use permit processing, long-range planning, or environmental management experience with a public or private land use agency. Professional level experience must be at the level equivalent to a Land Use/Environmental Planner III with the County of San Diego; OR
- One (1) year of experience as a Land Use/Environmental Planner III with the County of San Diego.
Note: Professional level land use/environmental planning experience supervising/managing a multi-disciplinary team, acceptable to the County, in a public or private agency may substitute for education on a year-for-year basis, for up to two years of the education requirement.
