Hello, I’m Howard Lee and I serve as the APA San Diego Section’s Membership Inclusion Director. My career in public service planning has brought me from San Luis Obispo County, to the San Francisco Bay Area, and down to Southern California. I currently work in the City of La Mesa Community Development Department on a broad range of current and advance planning projects. My undergraduate degree is in City and Regional Planning with a minor in Sustainable Environments from the California Polytechnic State University, San Luis Obispo. I also have a Master of Public Administration from the University of Southern California. Over the course of my career, my involvement in projects has resulted in increased collaboration within and between organizations, effective decision making, and strategic implementation of plans.

As the Section’s Membership Inclusion Director, my work will involve recruitment, support, and retention of planners of diverse backgrounds and races within the profession and the SDAPA Section membership. A goal of the Section is to incorporate diversity themes at Section events and organize activities with high school students from disadvantaged areas to encourage the consideration of planning as a future career. I foresee potential opportunities to merge future Section events in disadvantaged areas of the community that could shine a light on the planning profession to students who may have never considered this career path. Please contact me to share your feedback and ideas to progress diversity within the profession and Section.
