The County of San Bernardino is geographically the largest in the United States and the twelfth largest in population. We are currently in the midst of historic change as our leaders have adopted a Countywide Vision that sets an aggressive course for our future. Over the next few years, the Planning Division will be responsible for undertaking a major update to the General Plan and 14 Community Plans, developing entirely new Renewable Energy and Health and Wellness Plans, as well as numerous other strategic initiatives in support of the Countywide Vision.

The Planning Division includes Current Planning, Advanced Planning, and Mining and is committed to the fulfillment of the Countywide Vision for our communities. Planner Trainee is the entry level position into the professional planner series and, under training conditions, performs a wide variety of land use planning involving urban, regional, and environmental planning disciplines. Essential duties include researching and reviewing technical reports, maps, and plans; compiling data for planning projects; and responding to public inquiries regarding land use regulations.
Minimum Requirements: Education: A Bachelor’s degree or equivalent in Planning, Environmental Science, Landscape Architecture, Geography, Public or Business Administration or a related field. A list of coursework must be submitted with the application if no degree is indicated in one of the specified fields.

Planners I perform a wide variety of urban and rural planning studies and projects; research and review technical reports, maps, and plans; compile data for projects; and respond to public inquiries regarding complex land use regulations.

Experience: One (1) year of professional level land use planning experience involving comprehensive land use, environmental, or site design planning.
